Cancer Screening

Cancer Screening Information

Cancer screening is a test that looks for early signs of cancer in people without any symptoms. It can help cancers at an early stage when treatment is more likely to be more successful. Certain types of cancer screening can even prevent cancer from developing. Our practice offers:

Non-urgent advice: Smear Cervical

The reason for this reminder is that screening allows us to detect and treat small changes before they develop into cancer. By attending for screening you are significantly reducing your risk of developing cervical cancer. All our practice nurses are fully trained to a high standard to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The equipment we now use is all disposable and the sample sent to the laboratory uses the latest technology. The number of inadequate samples has reduced dramatically which means far fewer women are requiring a retest.

The time between having a test and receiving the result has also greatly improved and all women should now receive their results in writing within 2 weeks. Should you have any concerns about screening, please do not hesitate to contact the surgery and request an appointment with the Nurse to discuss this. We understand it is your choice if you do not wish to participate in the screening program but it is known to save lives and we hope you decide to have the screening. If you decide to have the screening, please call the surgeon on 0121 328 1174 and book an appointment.

Bowel Cancer Screening

If you’re registered with the practice and live in an area where the test is available, you’ll automatically be sent an invitation. Call the free bowel cancer helpline on 0800 707 60 60 to check if it’s available in your area.

Patients aged 55 will be invited for a one-off bowel scope screening test if available in your area. From 60 onwards, you’ll be invited to do a bowel cancer screening home test kit every 2 years instead.
